For the launch of the Nike Fuel band AKQA ran the Make it Count campaign, encouraging athletes around the world retweet how they're making it count to instagram and twitter. Whilst also contributing fuel points via the fuelband to a global count.
At multiple locations, Texas (SXSW), New York (Nike Flag ship store), Poland (Złote Tarasy), Portland (Nike campus) various sized LED walls and displays were commissioned to stream various social content streams throughout the year. The fuelstream software was developed in flash to run as a kiosk executable, working on and off line 24hrs a day. Its stream layout configurable to accomodate multiple resolutions and screen configurations.
I developed the Nike fuelstream in two parts. The kiosk software to display the content and a background cache server to request updated content and cache locally for the app to consume. Lack of internet connectivity was common and kiosk hardware would often shutdown and restart on a schedule. Additionally displays often varied in size (2 story 4:3, vs 90ft wide LED walls), as such the kiosk software was configurable on screen to support multiple layouts and dimensions.
This adaptability allowed the software to run on any type of display and adapt to a variety of out of home situations.
